The building paperwork we handle for you

Nearly every residential tower in Dubai controls moving through a permit system run by the building management or the community developer. You usually need a move out permit from the building you are leaving and a move in permit from the one you are entering, and they are separate applications to separate offices.

Most buildings want the request a few working days ahead, along with your tenancy contract, your Emirates ID and sometimes a refundable deposit held against damage to the lobby, the lift or the corridors. Many restrict moving to set hours and book the service lift in fixed slots. Miss the slot and you wait for the next one.

We apply for both permits, book the lift and handle the deposit process with building management. You sign what needs your signature and we do the chasing. Remember to close your utilities separately, because the building will not do that for you.

How we pack an apartment

Packing starts in the rooms you use least and finishes with the kitchen and the bathroom on the morning of the move, so you can live normally until the last moment. Clothes on hangers go into wardrobe cartons and stay on their hangers. Bedding goes into its own cartons rather than being used as padding, because a duvet that has been stuffed around a frying pan is a duvet you will wash before you use.

Glassware, crockery and anything ceramic is wrapped piece by piece and packed upright rather than flat. Televisions and monitors go in their own cartons with corner protection. Mirrors and framed pictures are taped, wrapped and carried on edge.

Every carton is labelled with the room it is going to and a short note about the contents, so at the other end nothing needs to be opened to find out where it belongs.

Furniture, dismantled properly and rebuilt

Beds, wardrobes, dining tables, desks and TV brackets come apart before they are carried. It protects the furniture and it protects your walls and door frames, which is what the building deposit is really covering.

Fixings for each item go into a labelled bag taped to that piece of furniture, so the bolts for your bed frame do not end up in a carton marked kitchen. At the new apartment the crew rebuilds everything before they leave. You should not be assembling a bed at eleven at night.

Fitted wardrobes, built in units and anything screwed to a wall are a different matter. Tell us at the survey if you plan to take them, because most tenancy agreements say fixtures stay and a handover inspection will pick it up.

What an apartment move usually costs

Apartment moves in Dubai are priced on volume first, then on access. A ground floor flat with a loading bay next to the lift is a cheaper job than a fifth floor walk up, even if both hold the same furniture.
