Permits at both ends, and they are not the same permits

A move to Abu Dhabi needs approval from the building you are leaving and the building you are arriving at, and the two are rarely alike. Your Dubai tower will want a move out permit a few working days ahead, your tenancy contract and Emirates ID, a booked service lift slot, and sometimes a refundable deposit against damage to the lobby.

The Abu Dhabi building has its own form, its own document list and its own hours. Many ask for the new tenancy contract registered under Tawtheeq, which is the Abu Dhabi tenancy registration system and the equivalent of Ejari in Dubai. Some want the moving company trade licence, crew names and vehicle plates in advance. Some will not allow a move in on a Friday.

We apply at both ends, and we ask the Abu Dhabi building in writing what it needs rather than assuming Dubai rules carry across. That one call, made a week early, is the difference between unloading at three in the afternoon and waiting outside a loading bay that nobody will open.

One truck, one crew, no depot in between

Some companies move intercity loads by consolidation. Your furniture is collected, taken to a depot, held until enough freight is going the same way, then reloaded onto a second vehicle beside somebody else's goods. It is cheaper to run, and it is the main reason intercity moves go wrong.

Every extra handling is another chance of damage, and every shared load is another chance of a carton reaching the wrong address. We do it the plain way. One truck is loaded at your Dubai home, closed, driven down, and opened in Abu Dhabi by the crew that packed it. Nothing sits in a yard overnight.

It also keeps the inventory as one list. Each carton is numbered and marked with the room it belongs to at the new address. At the far end the supervisor checks the numbers back off with you standing there, so anything missing is found before the truck leaves rather than a week later.

Loading for highway speed, and what to keep in your car

Furniture that survives a fifteen minute run across Dubai is not automatically packed for two hours at highway speed. Trucks flex, they brake, and anything with room to move will move. Heavy items go low and hard against the front of the load. Mattresses stand on edge in covers rather than flat under boxes. Glass tops, mirrors and screens travel upright between board and bubble, never flat.

Straps and load bars go in every few rows so nothing shifts when the truck changes lane, and gaps are filled with blankets rather than left as voids. Cartons are filled to the top so the stack cannot collapse into itself. That is the difference between arriving clean and arriving with a chipped table leg.

Keep a bag in your own car rather than on the truck. Passports, Emirates ID, the tenancy contract and Tawtheeq paperwork, laptops and chargers, medication, jewellery, a change of clothes and the keys to both places. Bedding and towels for the first night are worth carrying too, because the box they are in will be somewhere in the middle of the load.

What a Dubai to Abu Dhabi move costs

An intercity move is priced like a local one with the distance added. Volume decides the truck and the crew, access at both ends decides how long the day runs, and the 140 kilometre leg adds fuel and driving hours rather than a fee that appears later. It is one price, fixed in writing.
